Jenkins Elementary selected as
NC School to Watch

In partnership with the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA), ReContext Data Solutions analyzes every public school in North Carolina to identify high performing schools and establish networks of schools serving similar populations.

The principal of Jenkins Elementary School, Dr. Ryan McCreary, was recently notified by the NCSBA and ReContext Data Solutions that Jenkins has been selected as a North Carolina School to Watch

“We are thrilled with this news and the recognition affirms that we have a very talented staff at Jenkins,” said McCreary. “Our educators have strong working relationships at each grade level.  They are constantly sharing ideas and strategies to reach the individual needs of the students while using a systematic approach to focus on the whole child.”

According to the award results, Jenkins Elementary performed 4.77 percent over a demographically identical model school on the 2016-2017 overall state exam. The results include the impact of student demographics, grade level and factors related to exam difficulty.

The Jenkins educators work diligently to maintain the individualized data walls – identifying and measuring the academic growth of every child in the school. The data wall system is used district-wide at Hickory Public Schools and helps to address specific needs in literacy and math. “It’s an on-going team process,” said McCreary. “We start our weeks with ‘Motivation Monday’ assemblies to help shape character lessons as we set the tone and pace for a positive learning atmosphere for the week ahead.

“Our teachers engage in new instructional strategies—working to become true educational leaders for our students.  Through weekly professional learning committees, our team works to problem-solve and come up with solutions to help all children to become successful.  In addition to our talented teachers, we have outstanding support from our school counselor, teacher assistants, and staff. They all work non-stop collectively bringing together our school vision to make Jenkins a school where every child has a chance to shine—to succeed,” said McCreary.

With approximately 405 students and a staff of approximately 52, including the cafeteria team, Jenkins continues to work hard to help every child reach his or her full potential. “Our motto is ‘Be the best Bobcat you can be,’ and I am very proud of the entire Jenkins team,” added McCreary.
