My students need opportunities to move so their brains can be engaged to learn. Bouncy Bands, ball chairs, and fidgets will allow them quiet ways to move in class.
"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.
My students have ADHD, Autism, or are kinesthetic learners.
They come from a variety of backgrounds and have learning challenges. Because of the state budget many of them spend part of their day crowded in a classroom with as many as 28 other students. This makes movement almost impossible.
My Project
Having fidgets and special chair adaptations will allow my students to be able to move silently within the learning environment. Being able to move will reduce anxiety and increase their ability to focus on learning activities. Students who have sensory needs will be able to meet their need for movement without disrupting their own learning or the learning of other students in the classroom.
So many times active students are viewed as a disruption, hopefully these fidgets will give them a necessary outlet to quietly manage their own sensory needs while simultaneously engaging in learning.
As my students see an increase in their success in the classroom, their confidence will grow and their opinions about school and learning will change for the better.
